A total of 96 individuals have been arrested for breaching environmental sanitation regulations across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nasarawa State.

The Chief Prosecutor on sanitation offences, Abubakar Mohammed, revealed this on Saturday following the monthly sanitation exercise in Lafia.

He explained that the offenders were apprehended for carrying out private business activities during the sanitation period, in violation of Section 9 (2) of the State Environmental Sanitation Law.

Mohammed noted that the violators were prosecuted by mobile courts across the LGAs to serve as a deterrent, emphasising that the enforcement aims to ensure strict compliance with sanitation rules and foster a cleaner environment in the state.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority (NSWMSA), Christopher Abari, announced that the government has finalised plans to revitalise two underutilised waste recycling plants in Lafia and Karu LGAs.

The facilities, located at Angwan Rere, Lafia, and Auta Balaifi, Karu, will be restored to full operation, with modern machinery set to be installed to enhance waste processing efficiency.

Abari said the project is part of the state government’s broader strategy to improve waste management, reduce pollution, and safeguard public health.

He added that the authority has strategically distributed waste bins across all 13 LGAs and urged residents to dispose of refuse at designated sites to prevent disease outbreaks.

“Our staff continue to evacuate waste from dumping sites regularly, and we call on the public to always deposit their waste at designated points to prevent the spread of diseases. A clean environment ensures healthier living for everyone,” Abari stated.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance observed during November’s sanitation exercise, commending security agencies, traditional rulers, and the media for their support.
