The House of Representatives is set to vote on items in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution on December 10 and 11.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu announced this to members during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, stated that debates on the constitutional amendment bills will take place on Wednesday and Thursday this week, ahead of the voting next week.
He further informed members that the committee has completed the technical work required at this stage of the review and is now preparing the final harmonised documents to be presented for consideration.
A total of 87 bills seeking amendments to the 1999 Constitution are currently under review. These proposals cover areas including electoral and judicial reforms, the establishment of state police, and fiscal changes.
Specifically, the bills aim to create additional seats for women, establish new states and local government areas, introduce state police, and grant full autonomy to local government councils, among other measures.
