Benin Republic has confirmed the arrest of thirteen soldiers following a failed attempt to overthrow the government.

The incident, which took place early Sunday, sparked tension in parts of Cotonou as residents received reports of unusual military activities and rumours of an attempted takeover.

According to security and military insiders, all but one of the arrested suspects are active-duty personnel.

The only civilian involved is a former soldier believed to have maintained close ties with some elements in the barracks.

Authorities say the arrests were made after loyalist forces moved quickly to neutralise the plot.

The situation escalated when a group of uniformed men appeared briefly on the national television station, announcing that they had seized power and claiming to represent a so-called Military Committee for Refoundation.

Their broadcast was cut short within minutes as loyal troops regained control of the facility and restored normal programming.

Government officials later confirmed that the attempted coup had been “completely foiled,” assuring citizens that constitutional order remained intact.

Security has since been tightened around major government buildings, military installations, and strategic points in Cotonou and other key cities.

Residents reported seeing additional checkpoints and patrols throughout the day. Despite the heightened presence of security forces, commercial activities gradually returned to normal as the government urged calm.

More updates will follow as additional details emerge.
