
The Police in Anambra State on Tuesday confirmed that 10 people were killed after some gunmen opened fire on some individuals having a meeting in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra Police Command said nine other people were injured during the attack by the gunmen.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 1, Ikenga said the gunmen stormed the meeting venue on Monday, June 30, evening and opened fire on the participants of the meeting.
While condemning the incident, Ikenga said the police are committed to apprehending the perpetrators of the barbarous act.
“The armed criminals came in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and attacked the gathering of a group unprovoked, shooting sporadically.
“The victims were rushed to the Hospital and regrettably, 10 (ten) people were confirmed dead. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue,” Ikenga stated.
He also said that a security team led by the Nigeria Police Force are at the scene over the incident and working to gather information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
Speaking on the deadly attack, residents said the gunmen invaded the venue where some indigenes of Ebonyi State were having their meeting.
They also stated that contrary to the figures by the authorities, about 19 people were confirmed dead from the attack.
While stating that they are not aware of the reason for the attack, the residents said it might be connected to the renewed enforcement of the sit-at-home protest observed every Monday.
Some other residents also said that the attack by the gunmen may be connected to a disagreement between members of the group.
One of the residents said the gunmen had requested the minutes of the meeting upon their arrival at the venue.
