It is no longer news that President Bola Tinubu has released Godwin Emefiele of his duty as the governor of Nigeria’s apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
What may be new, however, is that Emefiele’s deputy in charge of the CBN operations directorate, Folashodun Shonubi, has been appointed in acting capacity until a new governor is announced.
Politics Nigeria has compiled a list of eleven important things you should know about the new acting CBN governor.
- He was born on March 7, 1962.
2. The acting CBN Governor holds two Masters Degrees in Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Lagos.
3. Shonubi has spent over 30-years of of his life as a professional banker.
4. Before his new appointment, Shonubi has been the Deputy Governor Operations Directorate of the apex bank since October 2018.
5. Shonubi was the Managing Director/CEO of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System PLC from year 2012 – 2018.
6. Shonubi served as the Executive Director, Information Technology and Operations at Union Bank of Nigeria Plc.
7. He is also a member of the Board of Union Homes and Director, Information Technology and Corporate Services at Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited, with responsibility for the Group’s IT infrastructure in Africa.
8. Shonubi also had a stint with Citibank Nigeria Limited as its Head, Treasury Operations between year 1990-1993.
9. Between 1999 and 2007, Shonubi worked in MBC International as Deputy General Manager and supervised their IT operational platforms,
10. He served in First City Monument Bank Limited as Vice President and in Ecobank Nigeria Limited as Executive Director.
11. The new acting Central Bank Governor was on a number of sub-committees of the Bankers’Committee, including the Ethics and Professionalism sub-committee.
