“1,111 Nigerians killed, 276 abducted in June 2025” – New security report reveals

No fewer than 1,111 Nigerians were killed and 276 others abducted by non-state actors in June, according to a report by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited.

The report, released on Monday, showed a significant drop in overall security breaches compared to the previous month.

According to the findings, there was a 48.04 percent decline in security incidents, from 895 in May to 465 in June.

Fatalities also dropped by 14.27 percent, falling from 1,296 in May to 1,111 in June.

Abductions saw a steep reduction of 74.59 percent, with 276 people abducted in June compared to 1,086 the previous month.

Despite the overall decline, the report said civilian casualties remained high, accounting for 72.37 percent, or 804 people, of those killed in June.

Farmer-herder clashes were identified as a major cause of deaths in the North-Central region. At the same time, the North-West recorded the highest number of abductions, making up 72.10 percent of all reported kidnapping cases.

The second quarter (Q2) of 2025 witnessed a mixed trend, with a marginal 1.95 percent decrease in total incidents, from 2,359 in Q1 to 2,313 in Q2.

However, fatalities increased by 5.66 percent, rising from 3,301 in Q1 to 3,499 in Q2.

The report noted increases in deaths in the North-Central (34.97%), North-West (5.36%), and North-East (12.04%) regions.

Abductions fell by 11.45 percent in Q2, with 2,540 cases compared to 2,862 in Q1.

The North-Central, North-West, and North-East recorded notable decreases in abductions during the period.

In the first half of 2025, Beacon reported 4,672 security incidents, reflecting a 1.08 percent decrease compared to the second half of 2024, but a 9.21 percent increase when measured against the same period in 2024.

A total of 6,800 fatalities were recorded in H1 2025 — a 13.67 percent increase from H2 2024 and a 19.11 percent rise from H1 2024.

Zamfara state had the highest number of fatalities at 1,088 and also recorded the most abductions — 1,755 out of the 5,402 nationwide.

The report attributed ongoing violence in the North-West and North-East to non-state armed groups, including insurgents and bandits.

It also identified worsening security in the North-Central region, especially in Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states, where abductions, armed attacks, and raids on rural communities remained widespread.
