Following the gun powder explosion at the Talatan Mafara weekly market in Zamfara State, two victims have been confirmed dead.
It was gathered that the deceased – Lawal Matusgi and Sani Adamu Kanarkalgo – died on Wednesday, February 19, at the Intensive Care Unit of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto State.
Recall that about 50 people including traders and some customers at the market reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries following the unfortunate incident which happened on Tuesday at about 11.30 am.
Sources within the area said that the incident occurred at the section of the market were locally made guns are being sold.
One of the sources said people have been worried over the sale of locally made guns in the market earlier before the incident occurred.
He also called on relevant authorities to look into the matter and seek relocation of the Dane gun sellers to another location that might not be as crowded as a regular market.
The source said, “People have been expressing worry over the presence of Dane gun sellers in the market but nothing was done by our local authority. Even last year, a girl was killed as a result of accidental discharge at the same place where the explosion occurred.
“We are appealing to the state and local government authorities to find another place on the outskirts of the town for Dane gun sellers,” he said.
