158 stranded Nigerians return from Libya, IOM confirms

The International Organisation for Migration or IOM has successfully brought back another batch of 158 Nigerians who were stranded in Libya.

They arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 5.47 pm with Al Buraq Airline Boeing 737-800 with registration number 5A-DMG from Libya.

All the returnees were received at the Cargo Wing of the Airport and had to pass through screening by the Nigeria Immigration Services.

These 158 people were 86 female adults, 6 girls and 13 female infants. In addition, 42 male adults with three medical cases, three boys and 21 male infants.

NEMA Acting Coordinator, Lagos State Territorial District, Ibrahim Farinloye, said all of the returnees would be put in quarantine as a preventive measure for COVID-19, and other medical examinations would follow.

The IOM, sponsored by the European Union, has been at the front line to bring home young Nigerians who had left the country for better opportunities overseas but got stranded in Libya since 2012.

In total, about 19,000 Nigerians have been brought back so far.
