Reps Demand Suspension of Universities’ Fee Hike, Cite Reasons

The House of Representatives has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to temporarily halt the implementation of a tuition fee increase in universities across the country.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that a motion proposed by Aliyu Sani Madaki highlighted several universities, including Bayero University, Kano; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Uyo; University of Maiduguri; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; and Federal University, Dutse, among others, that have recently raised their fees.

The Lawmakers expressed concern over the timing of this fee hike, as it occurs amidst rising poverty levels, inflation, a high unemployment rate, and the recent fuel price increase.

They worry that this significant increase in fees could create difficulties for many students who are already struggling financially. Some may be forced to postpone their studies, while others might be compelled to drop out entirely.

Moreover, the lawmakers emphasise that this fee hike has the potential to heighten the already unstable situation in the country. They warn that students, who are already making threats, may resort to taking action against the Federal Government, leading to severe consequences for the nation as a whole.

In addition to the call for suspension of university fee hikes, the House of Representatives is also urging the Federal Government to reverse the recent increase in school fees in Unity secondary schools.
