Ahead of the 2023 general elections, over 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that defection formally took place at a political rally in Opobo, the headquarters of Opobo/ Nkoro Local Government Area (LGA) on Thursday. The event was organised by the Rivers Progressives Front (RPF).
Dakuku Peterside, a one-time lawmaker and former Director-General (DG) of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), hails from Opobo.
Present at the rally were Peterside; Tonye Cole, the APC 2023 governorship candidate; and erstwhile Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro LGA, Boma Brown.
Speaking at the event, Brown said: “Opobo and Nkoro have always been politically intelligent. We are a people whose exposure and intelligence have imbued huge human resources.
“Anytime we go against our intuition, we suffer the pain as we did in 1959 general elections when two Opobo sons in the same party lost elections because they put their eggs in one basket.”
Furthermore, Brown frowned at the manner traditional leaders are “hoodwinked, and intimidated to tow the path of politicians”, asking them to change.
