2023: Ex-NASS members tell Ayu when to resign

Former members of the National Assembly (NASS) from the South-West geopolitical zone have told Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to resign after the 2023 general elections.

In a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA by Yemi Arokodare, the Interim Coordinator of the PDP South-West Forum of Former Parliamentarians, the erstwhile lawmakers asked Southwest PDP leaders to “tarry a bit” on their demand for Ayu’s resignation.

“We wish to appeal to all the South-West leaders to tarry a bit on their request that the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, should step down as part of measures to address the lingering crisis in the party,” the ex-NASS members’ statement reads partly.

Ayu has been under pressure in the last few months, with demands for his resignation coming from different quarters, especially the camp of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state.

The call for Ayu’s resignation is said to be on the grounds that the national chairman and the presidential candidate of the party cannot be from the same region.

Amid the calls for his resignation, the national executive committee (NEC) of the party recently passed a confidence vote on him.
