Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Amaka Ekwo, the former Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB’s) New Media and Special Duties Coordinator and Press Secretary to Nnamdi Kanu, on Saturday asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to free the separatist leader and “let us hear from him”.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Ekwo expressed her belief that the Muhammadu Buhari administration keeping Kanu in custody, is a ploy for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) “to gain advantage” in the forthcoming 2023 election.
Recall that Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of Security Service (DSS) in Abuja since he was arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria in June 2021.
The Court of Appeal had on October 13 ordered the IPOB leader’s release, having dismissed the remaining six-count charge levelled against him by the federal government.
The federal government had asked the Court of Appeal to stay the execution of the judgment discharging Kanu, pending the resolution of an appeal it filed at the Supreme Court.
Since Kanu’s arrest, the battle for the soul of IPOB has taken a worrying turn.
There have been conflicting orders and frictions among top separatists, Kanu’s family members and the IPOB Leader’s lawyers.
Simon Ekpa declared a five-day sit-at-home earlier this week, which initiated bloodbath in Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi states. The sit-at-home order during periods that are not Kanu’s court days, has been repeatedly rejected by IPOB lawyers and the separatist group’s Directorate of States (DOS).
The @NigeriaGov should #FreeNnamdiKanu and let us hear from him.
Keeping him in detention is creating confusion and insecurity in Southeast Nigeria.
Perhaps, that’s the plan of @OfficialAPCNg and @NGRPresident to gain advantage. https://t.co/U5z7njrA3i
