2023: How I will handle National Assembly if elected president – Peter Obi

The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said if the National Assembly under his reign as president makes policies “that present win-win scenarios” for the nation, definitely there would be cross-party support.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Obi stated this during one of his international consultations with the Diasporas in the United States of America (USA).

Asked how he will handle the National Assembly considering presidents often find that they are hamstrung by the legislature especially when that body is dominated by members of opposition parties, the former Anambra State governor replied: “Presidential power as we know is the power of persuasion.

“Members of the National Assembly have a vested interest in making their constituencies work. Their respective constituencies invariably form the presidential or national constituency.

“Policies that present win-win scenarios for national and federal constituencies will definitely attract bi-partisan support.”

No member of the Labour Party won a seat in the House of Representatives and Senate in the 2019 general elections. The dominant parties are the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

  1. The canals in this country have been the challenge. Because they try to cover their sins by having to fix their own candidates into power. Let all the old men be shunned and let laws be made to hinder corruption at all levels and unattractive.

    1. Apart from that, the salaries of polticians is too high for the Nigeria economy to sustain. The senators and other elected members should have a salary a bit above the level 16 /17 of the civil service. Making laws is not mathematics or physics. These laws are already in the constitution. They only sit to add or revise or reverse it. It is not a job that should attract more tbsn #200 to 250 thousands per month.
