“Investigate killing of 2 Abuja residents by your personnel” – Amnesty International to DSS

Following the reported killing of two residents of the Karamajiji community in the Federal Capital Territory by Ajayi Abayomi, an official of the Department of State Services, Amnesty International has called for an urgent investigation.

The organisation, in a statement issued on Thursday said the DSS must investigate the killing of the two residents by Abayomi on January 19, 2026.

Describing Abayomi’s action as horrific, AI accused the DSS personnel of showcasing recklessness, unlawful use of firearms and abuse of power.

Recall that Musa Adamu, one of the victims of the shooting by Abayomi, died a few hours after the incident occurred in the area.

The second victim, Mallam Suleiman Salisu, however, died on Wednesday, January 28, at the Federal Medical Centre Jabi, Abuja.

AI said, “The DSS must investigate this horrifying incident and ensure that the suspect is brought to justice through a fair trial. This gross violation of human rights must not be swept under the carpet.

“While security personnel are supposed to protect people, gradually some of them are unleashing terror on society — creating a toxic climate of fear and corruption. Such an incident undermines trust and leaves people vulnerable to wanton atrocities,” AI stated.

Also reeling out appalling conduct of personnel of the secret agency, AI recalled that on September 7, 2023, a DSS operative killed a fashion designer at Garki International Market Abuja during an altercation with his girlfriend’s tailor.

The DSS personnel’s girlfriend had brought him into the market with a loaded gun because the fashion designer failed to “sew her clothes on time.’

“Amnesty International is deeply concerned that in addition to their stated remit of ensuring law and order, some security personnel investigate civil matters, and in some cases torture suspects involved in contractual, business and even non-criminal disputes,” AI added.
