‘APC is My Natural Home’ — Obasanjo’s Daughter Explains Why She Chose It Over PDP, ADC

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is her “natural home” as she officially returned to partisan politics.

She explained her decision to join the ruling party instead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Iyabo made this known during a radio interview on Saturday, where she spoke openly about her political comeback after more than a decade away from active politics.

According to her, the move was not sudden. She said the decision followed long consultations and sustained pressure from supporters who wanted her back in public service.

“Like I told you, a group of people who I did not bring together, I did not form them into a group, have been working, I think, for two years now. And then they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she said.

Iyabo disclosed that she carefully considered her political options before settling for the APC. She ruled out a return to the PDP, where she last contested an election, citing internal problems and instability within the party.

She also confirmed that the ADC was discussed as a possible platform but noted that the party was still putting its structure in place and was not fully prepared for her political plans.

Before making her final choice, she said she consulted widely with associates and supporters who encouraged her return to politics. She added that most of those who reached out to her are now members of the APC.

“So, I think APC is my natural home. I don’t have any animosity towards any individual or any group within the APC. I feel comfortable with all the actors I know within the APC,” she said.

She further explained that she feels more at ease within the APC than with some political figures she previously worked with in the PDP and ADC.

“I feel more comfortable, actually, than with some of the actors I know in the PDP, and some of them are now in the ADC. So I think it’s my natural home. I feel quite confident and happy to have made that decision. I have an absolute 100% feeling it’s my natural home,” she added.

Iyabo previously served as a senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011. She also held the position of Ogun State Commissioner for Health.

Her political career suffered a setback in 2011 when she lost her re-election bid to Senator Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

After the defeat, she relocated to the United States, where she focused on her academic career and later attained the rank of professor.

Her return to Nigerian politics has now been formally sealed with her participation in the APC e-registration exercise in Ogun State.

POLITICS NIGERIA gathered that she registered at Ibogun, Ward 11, in Ifo Local Government Area, confirming her full membership of the ruling party.

Consequently, her entry into the APC is expected to strengthen the party’s political structure in Ogun Central as preparations begin for the 2027 elections.
