BREAKING: Obasanjo’s Daughter Declares for 2027 Ogun Governorship Race Under APC

Daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo has announced her decision to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Politics Nigeria reports that she made this known during a radio interview on Eagle7 Sports 103.7FM with Nigerian football icon, Segun Odegbami, on Saturday.
Her declaration confirms her full return to active politics after years away from elective office. She also made it clear that she will not be seeking any other political position apart from governor.
In her words, “So moving ahead, I’m not going to be Commissioner. Like I said, I’m not even going back to the same party because I think that’s old and I don’t see the use of it. And I’m not going to go back to the Senate.”
She further stressed that her ambition is strictly focused on leading Ogun State.
“Like the American would say, there’s no need. And this is what I told my associates, when this all started. I said, the only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship.”
According to her, the journey toward the governorship race has already begun and will be pursued with seriousness and commitment.
“And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. And so that’s the journey I’m on. And we are very serious about it. I mean we are very dedicated to it.”
Prof. Obasanjo also confirmed that she recently joined the APC after sustained pressure from political supporters and associates who encouraged her to return to public service.
She explained that a group of loyal supporters had been mobilizing independently long before she made up her mind to contest.
“Like I told you, a group of people who I did not bring together, have been working, I think, for two years now. And then they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she said.
Prof. Obasanjo previously served as a senator and also held positions in Ogun State government before stepping away from frontline politics.
Recall that POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported that Iyabo Obasanjo officially joined the All Progressives Congress, marking her formal return to partisan politics.
