Tinubu’s public praise of Shettima quells 2027 running mate speculation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appeared to dismiss growing political speculation that he may drop Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general election, following his warm and pointed remarks at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held on Monday at the Presidential Villa.
Tinubu described Shettima as “a very good partner on the journey for progress,” a phrase widely interpreted by political observers as a reaffirmation of confidence in his Vice President amid persistent rumours of internal realignments within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The president arrived at the Banquet Hall for the Conference which focuses on advancing inclusive growth and sustainable development under the Renewed Hope agenda.
Attending as Special Guest of Honour, he was received by Shettima, governors, and senior government officials for the two-day policy summit.
Addressing participants, Tinubu said, “Distinguished Vice President and Chairman of the National Economic Council, Kashim Shettima, a very good partner on the journey for progress.
“Your Excellencies, the state governors, it is very heartwarming to see all of you present here. I cannot go item by item and state by state, but accept it as a collective respect,” Tinubu said.
The President’s remarks came at a time when speculation has intensified in some political quarters over possible changes to the party’s 2027 ticket, with Shettima frequently mentioned in unverified reports as a potential casualty of future political calculations.
By publicly acknowledging the Vice President’s role and leadership as Chairman of the NEC, Tinubu appeared keen to project unity and continuity at the highest level of government.
The tone of the address, notably delivered in the presence of state governors from across the federation, underscored a message of collective respect and cohesion.
Although Tinubu did not directly reference the 2027 elections, his choice of words and public commendation of Shettima are being read as a strategic signal aimed at shutting down divisive speculation and reinforcing stability within the administration as it approaches the midpoint of its tenure.
