Only Atiku, Jonathan Can Stop Tinubu in 2027 — Ganduje’s Former Aide Reveals

A former top aide to ex-APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje has named two politicians he believes can defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Salihu Tanko Yakasai, who once served as Ganduje’s media spokesman, said only two figures have the political weight to challenge the ruling party successfully.
He identified former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Goodluck Jonathan as the main threats to Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yakasai made this known during a recent interview where he spoke on party politics, the state of the opposition, and growing anger in northern Nigeria. He said the 2027 election would depend largely on whether the opposition can unite behind one candidate.
According to him, Atiku remains the strongest challenger if opposition parties agree to present him as their flagbearer. He argued that Atiku still commands wide support across the northern region and could mobilize voters against the ruling party.
“The only way they can come out en masse to vote against Asiwaju is if Atiku is the candidate. He will secure almost all the 19 northern states,” Yakasai said.
He also pointed to former President Jonathan as another figure capable of disrupting the APC’s plans. Yakasai noted that Jonathan could attract support from different regions and political groups if he chooses to return to the race.
“If he steps into the ring, Goodluck Jonathan will be the best candidate because he will appeal to so many groups. He only has one term,” he stated.
Yakasai further blamed northern dissatisfaction on what he described as unfair treatment by the current administration. He said many people in the region feel ignored despite their role in Tinubu’s victory.
“The part of the country that feels neglected and betrayed is the northern part of the country, because they made the president,” he said.
He accused the federal government of uneven appointments and project distribution. According to him, this has created resentment and could weaken the APC if a strong and united opposition emerges.
Yakasai warned that without unity, the opposition stands little chance against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
