Northern Youths Demand Impeachment of House Speaker Abbas, Urge Zoning to South

Northern youths have called for the removal of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, accusing him of abusing his position and promoting sectional interests.

The demand was made by the Arewa Youth Assembly in a statement signed by its Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami.

The group urged members of the House to begin impeachment proceedings and asked that the office of Speaker be zoned to the South for fairness and national balance.

In its statement, the group declared:
“After careful reflection, extensive consultation across communities, political stakeholders, grassroots leaders, and civil society networks, the Arewa Youth Assembly hereby passes a firm, unmistakable, and irreversible vote of no confidence on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Honourable Abbas Tajudeen.”

The youths accused the Speaker of concentrating federal appointments in one area of Kaduna State, particularly Zaria.

They said this pattern had created political imbalance and deepened feelings of exclusion in other parts of the country.

According to the group, several sensitive institutions and strategic offices have been dominated by individuals linked to one locality.

They described the situation as a political monopoly that contradicts the principle of federal character and national unity.

They further stated:
“Under the leadership of Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Nigerians are witnessing a dangerous concentration of power built on favouritism and sectional interest.”

The group argued that the Speaker’s office should represent all Nigerians, not a single community.
They said the current leadership has weakened trust in democratic institutions and damaged confidence among grassroots supporters.

On zoning, the youths said:
“We equally demand the zoning of the office of the Speaker to the South in the interest of equity, balance, national reconciliation, and as a practical necessity for restoring confidence in the system and ensuring equitable power distribution.”

They also criticised the impact of the Speaker’s leadership on the ruling All Progressives Congress in the North West.
According to them, party structures have weakened, and supporters now feel ignored and marginalised.

The statement added:
“We regret, deeply and publicly, our past support for Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.”

The group warned that its future support for the APC is uncertain if Abbas remains Speaker.
It said political loyalty must be earned through fairness and inclusion, not imposed through influence.

The youths also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to scrutinise requests coming from the Speaker’s office.

They warned that unchecked actions could damage national harmony and threaten the party’s chances in the 2027 elections.

They concluded that Nigeria needs a Speaker who promotes unity rather than division and serves the whole nation instead of a single locality.
