“We Will Establish State Police” — Tinubu Vows Action Against Rising Insecurity

President Bola Tinubu has declared that the creation of state police will no longer be delayed.

He said the policy is central to his government’s plan to curb insecurity across the country.

The President made the statement on Monday night during an interfaith Iftar with governors and top government officials at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Abuja.

The event marked the first Ramadan fast of the 2026 season.

Addressing the gathering, Tinubu assured Nigerians that his commitment to state policing remains firm.

He said the nation must strengthen internal security using local structures that understand community challenges.

“What I promise you is not to be postponed. We will establish state police to combat insecurity,” the President said.

Tinubu also spoke about the economy, expressing confidence that Nigeria has moved beyond its recent struggles.
He said signs of recovery are beginning to show.

“We are out of the woods. We are out of the dark tunnel of uncertainty. The economy is showing up,” he declared.

During his remarks, the President turned attention to political tensions in Kano State.
He urged Governor Abba Yusuf to show restraint and promote peace.

The appeal followed recent political realignments in the state after Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the APC, distancing himself from his former political ally, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

While many lawmakers followed Yusuf to the APC, the deputy governor remained in the NNPP, creating friction within the state government.

Speaking on the matter, Tinubu said, “I’m glad I see Abba from Kano, even though the cap is red, it’s not different from APC…I saw the crisis on TVC news, please temper justice with mercy.”

The President also advised APC governors to remain tolerant and inclusive, especially toward younger party members.
He warned against shutting out voices within the party.

“I will advise those in the same party with me to please bear in mind that those little ones, too, they cry. Tolerate everybody… Let’s see the young ones breathe too,” he said.

Tinubu praised Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his Ramadan outreach to both Christians and Muslims.
He described the gesture as a strong example of unity and compassion.

“I saw the layout of the Ramadan outreach for both Christians and Muslims.
It looked more robust. I thought you would eat all the 300,000 shares,” he added humorously.

The President said he continues to receive reports and complaints from different states.
He noted that development must reach local communities and vulnerable groups.

“There are a lot of complaints and commendations coming from all angles.
They will come from me too, but as long as we bridge together and we move together and determine to rescue this country, the best is yet to come to Nigeria,” he said.

Tinubu urged governors to focus on grassroots development and unity.
He also highlighted the importance of Ramadan coinciding with the Christian Lent season.

“You know what it means, discipline, sacrifice, faith, resilience, strong determination for us to continue to bridge together, pray together and love one another for humility, love for our neighbours and service for humanity,” he stated.

Nonetheless, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila were present, alongside several governors and cabinet members.
