JUST IN: ADC to petition ECOWAS court over assassination attempt on Obi, Oyegun

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced that it will petition the ECOWAS Court of Justice over what it described as an assassination attempt on Peter Obi and John Oyegun in Edo state.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the party, alleged that a gun attack targeted Obi, Oyegun and Olumide Akpata.
The party described the incident as “a dangerous and escalating pattern of political intimidation and terror against our party across the country”.
ADC said the alleged attack “represents an act of terrorism against the opposition, which has no place in a constitutional democracy”.
The party also accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of making inflammatory remarks that heightened political tension in the state.
ADC referenced a previous statement allegedly attributed to the governor that he would not guarantee Obi’s safety if he visited Edo.
“Let it be said plainly: Nigeria is not a private estate. Edo State is not the personal property of any party or any governor. No elected official has the constitutional authority to threaten, harass, or endanger law-abiding political actors for exercising their democratic rights,” the statement read.
The party said it is compiling what it described as cases of “acts of terrorism” against its members and would submit its findings to diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS court.
“We shall soon be making our reports available to all diplomatic missions as well as the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights,” the statement read.
ADC urged its members to remain vigilant and continue their lawful political activities without fear.
