“Otti exhibiting dictatorial tendencies” – APC chieftain slams Abia governor for tongue-lashing journalist

Prince Paul Ikonne, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governorship candidate in Abia, has accused Governor Alex Otti of exhibiting “dictatorial tendencies” over his reaction to a journalist during a media briefing.

Ikonne criticised the governor for describing a question posed by the journalist at the event as “irresponsible” and “stupid”.

Chika Nwabueze, a journalist, had asked Otti, “Your excellency, your administration has received briefs on infrastructure project and reforms, but critics say transparency and inclusive governance need improvement.”

“Can you provide verifiable data showing how your policies have directly improved the standard of living of Abia people?”

Ikonne said it was troubling that the governor allegedly resorted to personal attacks instead of addressing the question.

His words: “That journalist deserves commendation, not condemnation. It takes fearlessness to demand accountability in an environment where public officials appear uncomfortable with scrutiny.

“As an economist, is he not supposed to have verifiable statistics and empirical data showing the impact of his government on traders in Ariaria, Abia farmers, and unemployed across the state?

“Governance is not about rhetoric; it is about measurable outcomes.”

Ikonne said the state government owes citizens transparent explanations on how federal allocations and internally generated revenue have translated into tangible development.

He added that instead of responding to legitimate concerns, the governor chose to attack the journalist.

“Such conduct mirrors dictatorial tendencies, where dissenting voices are silenced rather than engaged,” Ikonne said.

Ikonne demanded that Otti tender an apology to the journalist and provide answers to the questions raised.
