BREAKING: Nigeria Finally Out of 2026 World Cup as FIFA Confirms DR Congo Spot

The Super Eagles of Nigeria campaign for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially come to an end.
This follows confirmation by FIFA that DR Congo will represent Africa in the inter-confederation play-off tournament.
The confirmation was contained in official competition documents circulated ahead of the play-off matches.
The documents outlined the format of the tournament and clearly listed the six participating countries. Democratic Republic of the Congo was named among the qualified teams, effectively shutting the door on Nigeria’s hopes.
Nigeria had remained hopeful after the Nigeria Football Federation challenged the outcome of the CAF play-off decided in November 2025. The Super Eagles had drawn 1-1 with DR Congo before losing on penalties, a result that ended Nigeria’s qualification run on the pitch.
Following the match, the federation submitted a formal petition, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the encounter. The appeal requested that the result be overturned and Nigeria reinstated into the inter-continental play-offs.
However, FIFA’s latest communication made no reference to any review or alteration of the qualified teams. This strongly suggests that the governing body has upheld the original result and dismissed Nigeria’s protest.
In its official statement, FIFA confirmed, “The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities.”
The statement further added, “All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”
With this development, the Super Eagles will miss the FIFA World Cup 2026, extending Nigeria’s absence from the global tournament after also failing to qualify for the 2022 edition.
