NBA Condemns Judge for Ordering Sowore’s Lawyer to Kneel in Court

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly criticised a Federal High Court judge over an incident involving human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.
The judge allegedly ordered a defence lawyer to kneel during proceedings in Abuja. The development has sparked fresh concerns about courtroom conduct and judicial authority.
The incident happened on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
It involved Justice Mohammed Umar and Sowore’s lead counsel, Marshall Abubakar. The situation reportedly escalated after a disagreement over the scheduling of hearing dates.
According to the NBA, the judge directed Abubakar to step out of the Bar and kneel while addressing the court. The lawyer had raised his voice during submissions. The judge also allegedly issued threats of contempt proceedings against him.
Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, the association described the action as inappropriate. It said such conduct raises serious questions about respect for the legal profession and the dignity of the court.
The NBA stated, “A judex directing a legal practitioner or indeed any person whatsoever to kneel in court is not a recognised judicial sanction under our laws and does not align with the standards of judicial conduct expected on the Bench.”
The body explained that judges have powers to maintain discipline in court. However, those powers must be exercised within the law. It stressed that contempt proceedings must follow due legal process. This is to ensure fairness and protect the rights of all parties.
The association also reminded lawyers of their responsibility to remain professional at all times. It urged legal practitioners to be firm but respectful in court. Maintaining decorum, it said, is key to preserving the justice system.
The NBA called for calm among all parties involved. It advised that disputes arising from courtroom incidents should be handled through proper institutional channels. .
