JUST IN: FG begins talks with Coventry University to establish UK-degree campus in Lagos
Dr. Tunji Alausa, minister of education, has announced that the Federal Government has begun discussions with Coventry University to establish a campus in Nigeria that will offer UK-accredited degrees.
Alausa disclosed this during a visit to London with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adding that the proposed partnership would allow Nigerian students earn UK degrees without leaving the country.
His words: “For too long, families have had to send their children thousands of miles away in search of quality education. We are changing that.
“With Coventry University Nigeria, our students will be able to earn fully accredited UK degrees — at significantly lower cost — without leaving the country.”
The minister said the initiative would allow parents keep their children at home while accessing international education.
“As I’ve said, we want Nigerian parents to enjoy having their children at home, while still receiving a world-class UK education,” he said.
Alausa said the proposed campus would be located in Alaro City in Lagos state, stressing that the institution would offer Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
According to him, the programmes will cover Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
He added that admissions are expected between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, while noting that the partnership is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s human capital development.
“Beyond access, this is about building Nigeria’s human capital — developing the skills, talent, and workforce needed to drive innovation, productivity, and long-term national growth,” he said.
