‘Tinubu Does Not Deserve a Salute’ – IPOB Protests in London, Demands Kanu’s Release

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday staged protests in London during President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to the United Kingdom, demanding the release of their detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The demonstrators gathered at several strategic locations across the city. These included Parliament Square, 10 Downing Street, the Commonwealth Office, and the Nigerian High Commission.
The protest drew attention from passersby and security personnel as the group moved between key government points.
In a video making the rounds online, one of the protesters spoke firmly about their position. “Our message is very clear: Tinubu does not deserve a royal salute. That is our stand today, being the 18th of March.”
The protesters carried placards with bold inscriptions calling for Kanu’s freedom. Many of them wore red caps, a symbol often associated with the group, and waved Biafra flags.
The flags, known for their red, black, and green colours with a rising sun at the centre, were visible throughout the demonstration.
Chants of “Free Nnamdi Kanu” echoed across parts of central London as the protesters maintained a peaceful procession. Some participants accused the Nigerian government of ignoring repeated calls for a political resolution to Kanu’s case.
Security presence was noticeable around the protest areas, especially near official buildings. However, there were no reports of clashes or arrests as the demonstration remained orderly.
Nonetheless, IPOB has consistently called for Kanu’s release since his arrest and ongoing trial in Nigeria. The group insists that his detention is unjust and politically motivated, a claim the Nigerian government has repeatedly denied.
