2027: Onyeama Declares for Presidency, Notifies Obasanjo, Jonathan

A political scientist, Francis Onyeama, has begun moves to contest Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

His early steps include reaching out to former leaders and key national figures as he prepares for a formal declaration.

Onyeama, 38, from Delta State, has written to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

In the letters, he informed them of his intention to run for office under the platform of the National Rescue Movement (NRM).

His consultations go beyond former presidents. He has also contacted respected traditional rulers and public voices across the country. Among them are the Oba of Benin, the Emir of Kano, and human rights lawyer Femi Falana.

The move is seen as part of a wider effort to build support ahead of his official entry into the race.

Sources close to his team said the consultations are only the beginning. They confirmed that Onyeama will formally declare his ambition on March 25, 2026, in Abuja. The event is expected to attract attention from political observers and stakeholders.

Onyeama is presenting himself as a candidate focused on ideas and policy. He has often spoken about the need to change how leaders emerge in Nigeria.

According to him, the country needs a system that rewards competence and clear thinking, not just money or political influence.

At the declaration, he is expected to present a detailed essay titled From the Political Class to the Reformist (Solution) Class. The document outlines his plans for governance and national development.
