JUST IN: Borno Governor Warns of Two Suspected Suicide Bombers Spotted in Maiduguri

The Borno State Government has issued a fresh security alert ahead of Eid prayers in Maiduguri, warning residents to be cautious following intelligence of a possible attack.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum made this known while speaking during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service. The interview was monitored in Damaturu.
He revealed that security reports point to the presence of suspected attackers within the city.
“We have intelligence that there are two suicide bombers lurking around to carry out attacks, and we are calling on all our people to remain vigilant.”
The governor explained that the warning became necessary due to recent developments in the state.
According to him, insurgents under pressure from military operations may be seeking soft targets to create panic. He noted that such attacks are often used as distractions when terrorists are weakened in their strongholds.
Zulum, however, expressed confidence in the efforts of security agencies. He assured residents that the situation is under control and that measures have been strengthened to prevent any breach during the festive period.
This is the governor’s first public comment since the deadly explosions recorded earlier in the week in Maiduguri. The attacks hit multiple locations, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, a busy roundabout, and the Post Office area. Casualties from the incidents were significant, with over 20 persons confirmed dead and more than 100 injured.
On Friday, the governor visited victims receiving treatment after returning from the lesser Hajj. During the visit, he commended the Federal Government for its swift intervention. He specifically mentioned the release of funds for clearance operations around Lake Chad and nearby areas affected by insurgency.
He also acknowledged the directive ordering Service Chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri. According to him, the move has helped strengthen coordination and response among security forces.
Zulum further reassured families affected by the attacks of continued government support. He said assistance would be provided to both survivors and relatives of the deceased.
Earlier, while still in Saudi Arabia, the governor had condemned the bombings through his spokesperson. He described the incident as cruel and targeted at innocent civilians during the Ramadan period.
Residents have now been urged to remain calm but alert. The government advised people to go about their normal activities while paying attention to unusual movements. Security has also been intensified around mosques and major gathering points ahead of Eid celebrations.
However, Authorities have called on the public to report any suspicious activity immediately to security agencies as efforts continue to prevent another attack.
