Ex-Nasarawa Governorship Candidate Dumps APC After Weeks, Returns to PDP

A former governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, Dr. David Umbugadu, has exited the All Progressives Congress (APC) just weeks after joining the party.
Umbugadu confirmed his decision in a resignation letter dated March 24, 2026. The letter was addressed to the APC chairman of Ika/Wangibi Ward in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
In the letter, he explained why he could no longer remain in the ruling party.
He pointed to internal developments within the APC. According to him, there were “political manoeuvres” that could affect his chances in the next governorship race.
The former candidate made it clear he was not comfortable with the situation unfolding within the party.
His exit comes barely three weeks after he was welcomed into the APC. Umbugadu had formally joined the party on March 2, 2026. The event took place at the Government House in Lafia and was attended by top political figures in the state.
Among those present were Governor Abdullahi Sule, former governors Abdullahi Adamu and Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, as well as other APC leaders. The reception had signaled a major political shift at the time.
However, the latest development has reversed that move. Umbugadu has now decided to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He described the PDP as his political home and base.
The politician has a long history with the PDP. He joined the party in 2014 after leaving the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
He remained a key member of the PDP for years and flew its flag in the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections in Nasarawa State.
