“Probe LG chairman’s attack on This Day reporter” – Ohanaeze Ndigbo tells Gov Nwifuru

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru to investigate the alleged attack on a This Day reporter, Benjamin Nworie by some thugs loyal to the Local Government chairman of Ishielu LGA, Peace Agwu.
The socio-political group made the call in a statement issued by its deputy President and national spokesperson, Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Chinyeze Ohia.
The duo urged the governor to exercise his authority and utilise his esteemed office as the chief security officer of the state to conduct an independent probe into the incident surrounding the attack on Nworie, who doubles as the State Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ebonyi.
Describing the alleged attack by the political thugs as “deeply disturbing”, Ohanaeze Ndugbo said it is important to note that Nworie is not just an ordinary person but a very reputable individual.
“The attack on him, carried out by suspected thugs allegedly loyal to Mrs Peace Agwu, the Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, is a blatant violation of his rights and an affront to the principles of a free and just society.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal assault on Mr Benjamin Nworie in his residence at Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. This heinous act took place right in front of his eight – year – old daughter and his wife. Such brazen acts of bullying and intimidation are completely unacceptable, not only to the general public but also to Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” the group warned.
Further expressing concern over the possibility of a recurrence and the need to nip such in the bud, Ohanaeze urged Nwifuru to summon his righteous determination.
“He should call upon the LGA Boss of Ishielu, Mrs Peace Agwu, to appear before him. This is necessary to address her alleged involvement in the attack against Mr Nworie, who is also a native of Ishielu LGA.
“Our message to Mrs Peace Agwu is clear and straightforward. This is the opportune time for her to prove her innocence. She must provide the suspects, who are widely known to be her boys and thugs, to the security agents for prosecution. It is her responsibility to cooperate fully in this matter and help uncover the truth,” the group added.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo also assured that it will closely monitor the progress of this investigation and will not rest until justice is served.
