“Our vision is to detach entire Abia from national grid” – Gov Otti

The governor of Abia State, Alex Otti has said that the focus of his administration is to detach the entire Abia State from the National grid.

Speaking on Friday, the Abia governor said the state has been strategic in its effort to power all the cities and communities in the state.

According to Otti, the Abia State commissioner for power and public utilities is currently in the Netherlands for the sole purpose of negotiating better electricity deals for the state.

“My Honourable commissioner for Power and public utilities is in the Netherlands negotiating that.

“Even though it’s a private enterprise, but we are interested in supporting them to grow because it’s all for us,” Otti said.

While Aba, the commercial city of the state is completely off the national grid, Otti said his ensure that the capital city, Umuahia and communities enjoy constant electricity.

He also stated that the state is working towards achieving an additional 125 megawatts for the electricity distribution in Abia.

“So, if we have another 125 megawatts, we will just channel it to straight to Umuahia and detach the entire State from the National Grid. That’s our vision,” Otti noted.

The disclosure from Otti follows the current electricity crisis suffered by Nigerians across the country with the multiple and random collapses of the national grid since the beginning of the year.

While the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has apologised over the constant failure in electricity supply, he has also stated that the challenges faced within the sector is beyond the control of the Federal Government.
