2027: Minister of Foreign Affairs Tuggar Set to Resign from Tinubu’s Cabinet

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is set to step down from the Federal Executive Council as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His planned exit is linked to his reported ambition to contest the Bauchi State governorship.
Multiple sources familiar with the development said the minister is preparing to resign in line with a fresh directive from President Bola Tinubu.
The order requires all political appointees with electoral ambitions to vacate their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was made public by the head of information and public relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dewan Goshit.
The announcement has since triggered quiet movements among cabinet members believed to be nursing political ambitions.
Tuggar’s expected resignation is coming shortly after the ruling All Progressives Congress concluded its 2026 national convention. The exercise saw most members of the party’s National Working Committee retain their positions without opposition, further stabilising the party’s internal structure ahead of the next election cycle.
Within political circles, attention has now shifted to serving ministers and top government officials who may be positioning themselves for elective offices. Tuggar is among those whose next move is being closely watched.
Supporters of the minister from Bauchi State have intensified consultations in recent weeks. Members of his political base, including those who attended the APC convention, say momentum is building around his possible governorship bid. They hinted that a formal declaration could happen soon.
Tuggar is not new to electoral politics. He previously represented the Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2011. Years later, he was appointed Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, where he served from 2017 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In 2023, he was brought into President Tinubu’s cabinet as Minister of Foreign Affairs, a role in which he has handled Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements and foreign policy direction.
