Ex-Ekiti Gov Fayose Defends Supporting Tinubu, Cites Competence Over Party Loyalty

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said that supporting Bola Tinubu does not amount to anti-party activity, despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Fayose stated this while stressing that national interest should take precedence over party loyalty, noting that political disagreements are a normal part of democratic practice.

He spoke on Sunday at the PDP national convention in Abuja.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. You are first an Ekiti man before becoming a member of any political party. All former governors are supporting the current governor,” he said.

The former governor also drew parallels with global politics to support his stance.

“In the United States, leaders do not always support members of their own party. Have they been expelled? No. Democracy accommodates such differences, especially on national issues,” he added.

Fayose further maintained that leadership support should be based on competence rather than party affiliation.

“We should not insist that our party must win when we know our candidate lacks capacity. Can you compare Seyi Makinde with Asiwaju?” he queried.
