It’ll Be Shameful If PDP Misses 2027 Ballot Over Internal Crisis — Saraki Warns

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has cautioned that it would be “shameful” if the Peoples Democratic Party fails to appear on the ballot in the 2027 general elections due to its internal crises.

Saraki made the remark on Sunday during an interview at the party’s 2026 National Convention held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

He explained that ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party are aimed at ensuring members have a credible platform to contest future elections.

“We must allow those who wish to contest in 2027 under the PDP to do so. It would be unfortunate if, through our own actions, we fail to make it onto the ballot,” he said.

Reflecting on the build-up to the convention, Saraki described the process as challenging, noting that those involved in reconciliation had faced criticism along the way.

“It has been a long journey to get here, and in the process, one had to endure several attacks,” he added.

Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism after witnessing the turnout at the convention, particularly the presence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, which he said strengthened confidence in the legitimacy of the exercise.

“When I arrived and saw the attendance, and INEC officials present, I felt relieved. That is what truly matters,” he said.

According to Saraki, renewed enthusiasm among party members is driven by the assurance that the PDP remains a viable platform for political ambition.

“They are excited because they now have a platform to pursue their ambitions, and the PDP can provide that,” he noted.

On the absence of some key stakeholders, Saraki said reconciliation efforts would continue beyond the convention, expressing hope that aggrieved members would return.

“For those not present, the door remains open. I will continue to engage and dialogue with them,” he said.

He also urged party leaders to set aside personal differences in the interest of members seeking elective positions.

“The focus should no longer be on us as leaders, but on the young men and women who need the PDP platform to pursue their aspirations,” he stated.

The PDP has continued to grapple with internal divisions since the 2023 general elections, including leadership disputes and defections, raising concerns about its preparedness for future polls.
