2027: Reps Deputy Speaker Kalu Breaks Silence on Abia Governorship Ambition

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has spoken publicly for the first time about growing calls for him to contest the Abia State governorship in 2027.
He said he is aware of the pressure from supporters and will respond at the appropriate time.
Kalu made this known on Tuesday during a gathering with political leaders, elders, and stakeholders from across his Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State.
The meeting drew strong attendance, reflecting increasing political interest ahead of the next election cycle.
Addressing the crowd, the lawmaker described the support he has received as “organic.” He urged his supporters to remain patient, assuring them that he would make his position clear soon.
According to him, the encouragement from his people has always played a key role in his political journey.
The Deputy Speaker, who is currently serving his second term in the National Assembly, acknowledged the symbolic gestures made by community elders during the meeting.
He was presented with a machete and a traditional girdle, items often used to signify readiness and endorsement in local political culture.
He said: “You have always done this symbolic preparation and given me the blessings of our elders and the spirit of our land.
“And every time I have gone with your blessing, I have always won.
“I am not afraid. I am prepared to listen to what you have said. I will come back with a decision soon.”
Kalu further assured the gathering that his eventual decision would be formally announced in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. He noted that this would be done in line with constitutional provisions and democratic principles.
Several stakeholders at the meeting openly endorsed him for the governorship position. Among them were Madukwe Ukaegbu, Abia’s representative at the Public Complaints Commission, and Professor Hagler Okorie. Both men praised Kalu’s leadership style and performance in office, describing him as a capable candidate for the state’s top job.
“Bende people are gathered here today because we are proud of you, because you have shown capacity in your representation and we know that you will do better as governor,” Mr Ukaegbu said.
Support groups from different parts of the constituency also showed their backing. They displayed placards with various messages, urging the Deputy Speaker to join the 2027 governorship race.
