APC Loses Another Key Figure in Kano as Former Governor Dumps Party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered another setback in Kano State following the resignation of a prominent political figure, former governor Kabiru Gaya.

His exit adds to the growing list of high-profile defections within the party, especially in the North.

Gaya, who once governed Kano State and later represented Kano South in the Senate, officially announced his departure in a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Gaya Arewa, located in Gaya Local Government Area of the state.

The move has stirred fresh conversations around the stability of the APC in Kano, a state long considered a stronghold of the party.

In the letter, the former governor made it clear that his decision was not taken lightly. He noted that it followed a period of deep reflection and consultations with key stakeholders and supporters across his constituency.

“I hereby formally tender my resignation from the All Progressive Congress (APC) effective today, 5th April 2026.

“It has been an honour to serve under the platform of the party, particularly during my tenure as a Senator (2015–2023). I remain grateful for the support, trust, and opportunities given to me during this period.

“However, after careful reflection and wide consultation, I have come to the considered conclusion that it is in the best interest of my constituents and my personal convictions to step aside from the party at this time. I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years,” Gaya however, stated.

Although he did not immediately disclose his next political move, sources within Kano political circles suggest that his resignation may signal a potential realignment with the Kwankwaso ahead of next year’s elections.

Gaya’s political career spans decades, with significant roles at both state and national levels. His departure is seen by many as a major blow to the APC’s grassroots structure in Kano, particularly in his local government area where he commands strong loyalty.

Party officials in the state are yet to release an official statement regarding the development. However, insiders admit that the leadership may need to act quickly to prevent further defections and maintain cohesion within its ranks.

Political analysts believe the development reflects ongoing internal challenges within the party, especially in northern states where power struggles and disagreements over party direction have continued to surface.
