NYSC building unity, tolerance among Nigerian youths – Ahmadu Ali

Col. Ahmadu Ali (rtd), pioneer chief executive of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has declared that the scheme is fostering unity and tolerance among young Nigerians.

Ali spoke during a visit by NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu to his residence in Abuja.

He said the NYSC has continued to promote national integration through its programmes, adding that corps members are exposed to different cultures and environments across the country.

“People have the privilege to go to other states which ordinarily they wouldn’t have,” he said.

He said the experience helps young Nigerians develop tolerance and adaptability, adding that the scheme has remained relevant for over five decades.

He commended Yakubu Gowon for establishing the NYSC in 1973, describing the scheme as an enduring programme with continued relevance.

He commended successive managers of the scheme for sustaining its vision, noting that initial scepticism by graduates has been replaced with acceptance and excitement.

Brig-Gen Nafiu said the visit was to honour Ali as the pioneer chief executive of the NYSC, adding that the former DG laid a solid foundation for the scheme.

He said the NYSC has remained stable more than 50 years after its establishment, commending Ali for his leadership in navigating the scheme’s early challenges.
