“Resignation Is Not a Taboo” — Lawyer Urges Tinubu to Step Down Over Insecurity

Legal practitioner Maduabuchi Idam has publicly called for President Bola Tinubu to step down from office if the federal government continues to struggle with the country’s escalating security crisis.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Saturday, the lawyer argued that the current administration’s failure to curb violence across the federation suggests a need for a change in leadership.

Idam pointed out that “resignation is not a taboo,” characterizing it as a honorable and legitimate path for any leader who finds the safety of the citizens increasingly difficult to guarantee.

While acknowledging that the security landscape in Nigeria is deeply complex and not easily dismantled, he questioned the President’s effectiveness, given that he claimed to be prepared for the role before taking office.

The lawyer criticized the presidency for sticking to what he described as an outdated “doctrinal security template.” He noted that the administration relies too heavily on manual combat and conventional military maneuvers, which he believes are ill-suited for the asymmetrical warfare currently being waged by bandits and terrorists.

Idam suggested that rather than traditional methods alone, the government should shift its focus toward a technology-heavy strategy involving drones, satellite surveillance, and extensive CCTV networks to stay ahead of threats.

Further expressing concern over the humanitarian fallout of the crisis, Idam accused the government of neglecting internally displaced persons (IDPs). He warned that if the protection of fundamental rights continues to be compromised by persistent violence, Nigerians might have to seek legal redress against the state.

According to him, the nation cannot afford to continue with the current trajectory, especially when the strategies being used mirror those of previous administrations that failed to yield lasting peace.

In a related development, Politics Nigeria recalls that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) recently slammed the presidency, alleging that political maneuvering has taken priority over the protection of lives. This follows a high-profile ambush in Borno State where Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and several soldiers were killed, an incident that has further fueled calls from various quarters for a total overhaul of the nation’s security architecture.
