Many feared dead as Nigerian Air Force airstrike hits market in Yobe state

Dozens of traders and buyers are feared dead following a reported airstrike at Jilli market in Geidam local government area of Yobe state.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the market located in Fucchimiram ward, a border community near Borno state.

Preliminary reports suggest a military fighter jet was pursuing suspected Boko Haram insurgents operating in the area.

The insurgents were reportedly heading into the market to collect levies from residents when the strike occurred.

Eyewitnesses said casualties may be high, with some sources claiming more than 200 people could have been killed.

They said bodies were found scattered in nearby bushes, while injured victims were taken to medical facilities. Some of the wounded are receiving treatment in Damaturu and parts of Borno state.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force has not confirmed the incident or released official casualty figures.

Jilli community, which is close to Damasak in Borno state, is more than 200 kilometres from Damaturu, the Yobe state capital. The exact number of casualties remains unclear as investigations continue.
