Abia State Government has dismissed claims that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will take over the state in the 2027 general elections, insisting that Abia cannot be captured by political promises or family influence.

The reaction followed comments attributed to the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial Zone, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who reportedly vowed to secure the Abia Government House for the APC in 2027.

The state government described such comments as personal opinions that do not reflect the will of the people.

In a statement issued on Monday, the government acknowledged that Senator Kalu has the constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice, including his younger brother, under the Abia APC.

However, it stressed that the power to choose the next governor of the state belongs entirely to Abia voters.

The government warned against any attempt to dominate the state’s political structure through what it described as a “family fiefdom.” It stated that Abians would not accept a situation where one individual or family controls several key political and public offices at the same time.

According to the statement, such offices include the positions of Senator, Governor, Commissioner representing Abia State in the National Assembly Service Commission, and Ambassador.

The government said concentrating power in this manner goes against democratic values and the collective interest of the people.

Reaffirming its strength in the state, the Labour Party said it remains the ruling party in Abia and is well-positioned ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party disclosed that it has more than three capable and credible aspirants ready to contest for the Abia North Senatorial seat when the time comes.

The government explained that the quality of these aspirants reflects the Labour Party’s focus on inclusive leadership, internal democracy, and merit-based competition. It added that the party is not built around individuals or families, but around the aspirations of ordinary citizens.

The statement further assured that at the appropriate time, the Labour Party would mobilize its members, supporters, and stakeholders across the state to support its eventual candidate in Abia North.

It called on Abians to resist political monopoly and support leadership that promotes fairness, accountability, and people-driven governance.

The government also emphasized that the political future of Abia cannot be decided through declarations or endorsements made outside the will of the electorate.

It said the state’s recent political history shows that voters are increasingly conscious of their power and ready to defend it.

The press release was signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, and dated January 5, 2026.
