Emerging information suggests that last Saturday’s closed-door meeting between former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) National Leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, may have been a strategic move to reposition for the 2027 elections.
The two political heavyweights met at Aregbesola’s residence in Lagos, fueling speculation of a possible alliance as Kwankwaso seeks to expand his influence beyond northern Nigeria.
A source within the Kwankwasiyya camp revealed that Kwankwaso aims to leverage Aregbesola’s grassroots strength in the Southwest, particularly in Lagos and Osun, where he commands significant political clout.
“It is no secret that Kwankwaso has long sought to gain a foothold in the Southwest, but Tinubu’s dominance has been a major challenge. With Aregbesola now estranged from the APC, he presents a strong ally in the region,” the source told Punch.
Recently, Aregbesola’s political group, Omoluabi Progressives, officially cut ties with the APC in Osun. His next political move has since remained a subject of speculation.
Confirming the development, NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, described the meeting as part of wider consultations to build “bridges across the Niger.”
“All options are on the table. These discussions are still at an early stage, but Aregbesola is engaging with multiple political figures, not just Kwankwaso,” Johnson noted.
When asked whether Aregbesola would work against Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, Johnson insisted that the former Osun governor does not require permission to align with any political movement.
“Didn’t he oppose Tinubu in 2023? The sky didn’t fall. Now, he is politically free. Aregbesola was instrumental in Tinubu’s past successes, particularly in Lagos, but he is a force on his own,” he stated.
Both Aregbesola and Kwankwaso are known for their grassroots political strategies, and analysts believe their alignment could be a game-changer in 2027, whether they run for office or throw their weight behind another candidate.
“It’s still early days, but their influence will shake up the political landscape. By late 2024 or early 2025, we will see clearer moves,” Johnson added.
