2027 Elections at Risk of Major Compromise – YIAGA Africa Raises Alarm

YIAGA Africa, a non-profit organisation, has warned that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections risk being the most compromised and possibly the costliest in the nation’s history.

The group’s Executive Director, Samson Itodo, raised the concern on Wednesday during an interview, where he spoke on the state of Nigeria’s elections and the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The 2027 elections could most likely be the most compromised, and perhaps the most expensive.

“If it’s not managed carefully, from a statesmanlike perspective, the next election could be jeopardised,” he cautioned.

Itodo noted that public trust in the electoral process is at its lowest and raised concerns about the forthcoming leadership transition at INEC.

“The incumbent INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has been there for ten years, and his exit will leave a vacuum.

“If a new INEC chairman is appointed, is there sufficient time for him to settle down?

“You also have commissioners who will leave next year and others exiting on the eve of the 2027 elections. This makes the situation quite significant,” he explained.
