The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, has declared his party will confidently retain Kano State and go on to win at least three other northern states in the 2027 general election.
Ahmed made the remark while reacting to the recent wave of defections that hit the party in the National Assembly.
He insisted that the exit of some lawmakers would not weaken the NNPP or affect its plans for the next election cycle.
Two members of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki, had officially dumped the NNPP for the APC.
Their separate letters were read on the floor of the House by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen. Both lawmakers blamed what they called an “irreconcilable crisis” within the NNPP in Kano State.
This is not the first loss for the party. Earlier in May 2025, the NNPP also lost two Kano lawmakers — Kabiru Usman and Abdullahi Sani — who left for the APC.
Several other members from Kano and Jigawa had also defected around the same period.
Despite this, the national chairman maintained that the party is not shaken. He said the NNPP has continued to attract new members across the North, especially in Kano.
Ahmed added that the defections may have even opened the door for “more committed people” to join the party.
Ahmed said the NNPP is targeting victories in Jigawa, Kaduna, and other northern states in 2027. He noted that the chances would be even stronger if the party enters a coalition, but insisted the NNPP is confident either way.
The NNPP chairman also claimed that the party actually won Taraba State in the last election, saying the result was “taken away” from them.
He described that incident as proof that the party is gaining wider acceptance.
