2027: Peter Obi free to become LP’s presidential candidate with or without me – Datti

The Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that Peter Obi, is at liberty to contest the 2027 presidential election on the party’s platform with or without him as running mate.

He made this known during an interview on Wednesday.

“They are two key individuals that I have tremendous respect for; one is Peter Obi. I welcome him openly.

“The Labour Party welcomes him to still come and retain the Labour Party ticket and contest in 2027 with or without me. And the ADC is welcome to adopt a southern candidate,” Baba-Ahmed said.

Baba-Ahmed emphasised the need for Nigeria to be led by individuals who can offer genuine governance rather than chaos.

“We need leaders with capacity and compassion—people who will develop Nigeria, fulfil their promises, and not turn governance into disaster,” he said.

Addressing concerns over Peter Obi’s involvement with a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Baba-Ahmed dismissed claims of anti-party behaviour, describing it instead as part of a developing political landscape.

“This is not anti-party activity; it’s an unfolding situation. A coalition means political parties, interest groups, and individuals are coming together. It’s still taking shape,” he explained.

“I attended coalition meetings. Peter Obi is welcome to continue to attend those coalition meetings,” Baba-Ahmed added.
