The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged all opposition parties in Nigeria to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the call on Friday during a courtesy visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed at the Government House, Bauchi.
“The opposition must work together,” Obi said. “However, we are not coming together just to grab power. If that were the case, neither Governor Bala Mohammed nor I would be part of it. We are uniting to serve Nigerians better because they are not being served well by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).”
He stressed that the initiative was not driven by personal ambition but by the need to create a lasting political structure focused on service to Nigerians.
“This is not about positions, he has been a senator, a minister, and a governor. I have also served as governor. We want to create a political party that functions the way parties should, bigger than the individuals in power,” Obi stated, citing South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) as an example.
Governor Mohammed backed Obi’s call, saying unity among opposition parties was essential to mount an effective challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“The opposition parties must come together. Mr. Peter Obi is one of the outstanding leaders of the opposition, and having him on board will be a great advantage,” he said.
Obi is part of the opposition coalition housed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) while Mohammed is a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
