24-hours after jailbreak, Senate confirms Sylvester Nwakuche as NCoS CG

Barely 24 hours after a jailbreak was recorded at the Federal Correctional Facility Centre, Kotonkarfe in Kogi State, the Nigerian Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the substantive Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Nwakuche’s appointment was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, by the leadership of the Nigerian Senate.

Speaking on the floor of the plenary, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the decision of the Red Chamber to confirm his Nwakuche’s appointment follows the recommendations by the Senate Committee on Interior.

He said the committee, after due screening has recommended the confirmation of the president’s nominee as the substantive CG of NCoS.

He said, “I hereby consider the report of the Committee on Interior on the screening of Mr President’s nominee for appointment as the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

“And approve the nomination of Mr Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche Mni as Controller General Nigerian Correctional Service,” Akpabio said.

He further urged the CG to ensure that incidents of jailbreaks across the country comes to an end.

Akpabio stated, “To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks in Nigeria.”
