774,000 Jobs: Crisis looms as Buhari directs Keyamo to begin recruitment

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has given the Minister of State for Labour, Productivity and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), the permission to begin the recruitment of 774,000 Nigerians for federal jobs.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports the federal government had set up a Special Public Works Progamme which will engage some Nigerians in carrying out public services such as street sweeping, waste disposal, road maintenance and others.

According to Keyamo, the programme is aimed at engaging young jobless Nigerians and also providing a means of sustenance for them which will last for three months. The youths will be paid N20,000 per month.

Confirming the President’s directive, some sources in the presidency explained that the president directed Keyamo to proceed with the recruitment after meeting on Monday.

The sources said Keyamo met with the President and narrated what transpired between him and the National Assembly over the recruitment process.

According to the sources, the President was angry over the continuous interference of the legislature in matters on the purview of the executive.

The President asked the minister to proceed with the execution of the programme and to ensure it is conducted ”strictly according to existing laws”.

He also ordered the Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to stop any alternative plan on the programme with the National Assembly Joint Committee on Labour, Productivity and Employment.

President Buhari has also directed Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), to write a letter to the national assembly asking it to stay within the remit of its statutory responsibilities.

Recall that the minister had inaugurated the committees made up of 20 people in each state which will be in charge of engaging 774,000 Nigerians.
