The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State has called for the immediate relocation of sensitive materials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Abuja.
Isaiah Davies Ijele, the Director of New Media for Muri/Sam Campaign Council, expressed concerns about a purported plot to sabotage the election materials in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.
Ijele alleged that individuals affiliated with a different political party aimed to flood rooms housing these materials in Lokoja, potentially destroying them.
He specifically pointed to an INEC staffer, purportedly a close relative of the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Mr Kobo Adamu, alleging that the individual possessed detailed information about the storage and movement of the sensitive materials.
“In an independent institution, having individuals with close ties to key stakeholders around election materials is unacceptable,” Ijele stated, emphasizing the need for INEC’s Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, to ensure the immediate transfer of all materials to the Abuja headquarters for safekeeping.
He also urged removing anyone closely associated with these materials to safeguard democracy in Kogi State.
Highlighting the significant government and taxpayers’ investment in procuring these sensitive materials, Ijele emphasized that their safety should not be compromised.
His words:
“As an independent institution, it is not acceptable to have individuals who have close ties to key stakeholders, around election materials. Therefore we demand that the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu to, order for the immediate movement of all materials to the Abuja head office for safekeeping.
“Additionally, the transfer of anyone with a close association to the materials should be mandated to safeguard democracy in Kogi State.
“The safety of these election-sensitive materials cannot be compromised, especially considering the significant amount of government and taxpayers’ money used for their procurement.”
