The recent peace accord between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, seems not to be fully implemented as the governor appears hesitant to withdraw a lawsuit against the State House of Assembly.
The Abuja agreement, brokered in hopes of ending the escalating political tension between the two leaders, stipulated that both sides withdraw all court cases related to the ongoing power struggle. However, during Wednesday’s hearing in a suit brought by Fubara against the House, the governor’s lawyer, D.O. Okoro, indicated he had not been instructed to drop the case.
This drew an immediate objection from Chief Ferdinand Orbih, representing the House of Assembly. Citing the agreement reached in Abuja, Orbih informed the court that his clients were willing to withdraw the matter.
Justice O. Ben-Whyte, thereafter, directed Okoro to confer with his client and report back on their position regarding the settlement agreement. The case has now been adjourned to January 31, 2024.
