The chairmen of all 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State have dragged the state government to court over plans to construct two flyovers in the metropolis.
The state government is led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The chairmen are unhappy that 70% of funding allocation for the projects is drawn from the LGAs’ joint account.
The aggrieved chairmen, backed by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, filed a suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1733/2023) dated December 29, 2023, before the Federal High Court in Abuja. They are seeking an order to restrain the state government from tampering with their funds in the joint account.
The suit names the Kano State Government, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Accountant General of the state as defendants.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, however, remains undisturbed by the legal challenge. While laying the foundation stone for the flyovers on Friday evening, he defended the funding arrangement, claiming it is a well-established practice inherited from his predecessors. He further said that all LGAs will benefit from the completed flyovers.
